Bug of the week: Gibbifer californicus

Earlier this week, I saw this tweet from Derek Hennen and spat water out all over my desk.

A really fascinating Family of beetles, I would recommend browsing through photos on Flickr. These beetles come in impossibly beautiful colours, and shapes. Aptly named beetles indeed. Gibbifer comes from the Latin (Gibbus – hump), and (Fer – bearing), a name given to this genus due to it’s unusual triangular-humped elytra. Deadwood that supports this beetles dietary requirements (fungus) is key to support these species.
